How to Listen: Training Volunteer Listeners to Provide Emotional Support.

Date: September 3, 2019

ASSIST Alicante volunteer, Emma, recently attended a group training course for Samaritans Listening Volunteers. There were six people in the group, all of different ages and from various walks of life.

The course, conducted by two long time Samaritan listeners, was very informative. It not only gave a more detailed insight into the work that Samaritans do – for example, as well as the free phone line, those seeking emotional support are also able to contact the Samaritans by email, Whatsapp and Facebook, as well as dropping into the centre for face to face help – but also encouraged the trainees to consider how well they actually listen to others, through role play and discussion.

Although the role of a Samaritan listener is, of course, a very important one, and the group took bonding together and supporting one another seriously, there was still plenty of fun and laughter.

Samaritans in Spain and ASSIST Alicante are working in partnership to assemble a team of listening volunteers in the Alicante — Benidorm area. If you have four hours to spare once a week to do something that is personally rewarding and be of benefit to vulnerable people, and wish to join the new team, we would love to hear from you. A desire to help someone in need is all that is required. You don’t need special skills or experience.

If you are interested in becoming a listening volunteer, please call Emma at ASSIST Alicante on 664 23 11 70 for an informal chat and more information.

Thank You!
